Mrs. Kurtis taught school for two years in Gunnison, Colo., and later was a bookkeeper for Horton Oil Co. for more than 15 years. She and her husband owned and operated Little House on the Prairie for 25 years and she had written a book, Prairie Recipes and Kitchen Antiques.
She was born Feb. 3, 1911, in LeAnna, to Bert Horton and Lillian Jones Horton. She moved with her family to Wayside in 1913 and graduated from Wayside High School. She earned a degree in education at Emporia State College.
Mrs. Kurtis was a member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Bill Kurtis, Chicago; a daughter, Sen. Jean Schodorf, Wichita; two sisters, Doris Horton, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Bernice Hecht, Topeka; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Potts Chapel in Independence. Burial will be in Harrisonville Cemetery southwest of Independence. The casket will remain closed at the funeral chapel, where relatives and friends may sign a register from noon to 8 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Friday.
Memorial contributions may be made to Little House on the Prairie and sent in care of the funeral chapel
