Lieutenant Myron Edward Whitener, 38, of Martinsville, Va. member of the United States Navy and at present commanding officer of the Lenoir-Rhyne Naval Air Cadet Training school, at Hickory, N.C. was instantly killed shortly after 9 o'clock this morning when a special Naval plane crashed in a field about 10 miles southeast of Hickory.
Lieut. James Priest, 25, (junior grade) who was flying with Whitener was also instantly killed.
While military authorities at Hickory conducting an investigation into the tragic accident refuse to give out any details, it was authoritatively learned here that Lieutenants Whitener and Priest had left a Hickory field shortly before the crash and had gone to a farm southeast of that city where a Naval training plane, piloted by a student at the Naval Air Cadet Training school had made a forced landing Monday afternoon. The plane is said to have gone out of control and crashed to the ground as it attempted to take off from the emergency landing field at the farm after the officers had made an official investigation into the student pilot's forced landing Monday. The student pilot escaped injuries.
Lieut. Whitener, who was at home two weeks ago, had been stationed at Hickory for the past several months.
His wife. the former Miss Ruth Carter, was residing with him at Hickory.
Mr. Whitener, a native of the Hickory-Lenoir section of North Carolina, had made his home here since young manhood, and at the time of his entry into Uncle Sam armed forces, was general superintendent of the W. M. Bassett Furniture corporation here.
He came here from Bassett where his family resided some years after moving from North Carolina.
He was serving his third term as a member of the Martinsville City Council when he entered the service. Offering to resign last year after entering the military service, he was granted an indefinite leave by Council and only last week had submitted in writing a second request that his resignation be accepted in view of the fact he was unable to fulfill his duties of office here and that two other members are sick.
Mr. Whitener took an active part in Martinsville's civic and social life, being a past president of the local Kiwanis club, a member of Christ Episcopal Church, of the Patrick Hnery Boy Scout Council, the George W. Wright Commandery of Masons and of Forest Park County club. Surviving are his wife; his mother, Mrs. M. E. Whitener and two brothers, Robert L. and H. Kenneth Whitener, all of Martinsville.
Funeral arrangements have not been made, pending the arrival of the body here.
A number of relatives and friends of the deceased left early this afternoon for Hickory.
