Hugh married Mary Jane Kincaid Nov 10 1865 shortly after he returned from the war. He had enlisted in Co B NC 7th Cal Bat CSA in 1862. Five children were born of this marriage:

Inez Lee Hayes (1866-1866)
George Elisha Hayes (1867-1944)
Ella Kincaid Hayes (1870-1888)
John Patton Hayes (1873-1962)
Mary Gertrude Hayes Brittain (1876-1952)

He then married Lenora Ann Beal Sept. 15, 1898.
