Mrs Ruth Blackwood Fendley, age 100 of Cleveland. Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 18, 2009 from the Graveside of Oak Hill Cemetery in Oneonta. The family will receive friends at Lemley Funeral Chapel of Oneonta Sunday from 10:00 am until 1:30 pm. It is at the family's request the donation be made to a Charity of your choice in memory of Mrs. Fendley. Graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 pm Sunday. Mrs. Fendley passed away in Oneonta early Saturday morning. Mrs. Ruth Blackwood Fendley attended Huntington College from 1926-28. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education from the University of Alabama in 1930. She attended Troy State University from 1953 to 1954 and received a BS in Elementary Education. Mrs. Fendley taught 3rd grade as a 17 year old High School graduate at Cleveland Elementary School for 1 year. After completing college she taught at Oneonta High School for 2 and half years, Rawls High School for 2 years and Andalusia Elementary School for 29 years. She was a member of the Alabama Education Association, Alabama Retired Teachers Association and former member of DELTA KAPPA GAMMA. Mrs. Fendley was listed in the Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America Book in 1972. She is survived by her son, John Fendley of Millersville, MD; grandchildren, Steven Scott Fendley of Austin, TX and Karen Elizabeth Fendley of Odenton, MD; great grandchildren, Matthew Alexander Longfellow, Andrew Christopher Longfellow and Zachary Michael Longfellow.
Pallbearers will be: Eddie Hill, Gary Montey, Jack Sullivan, Steve Pass, Roland McCoy, and Bob Davis.
