Local lore says that Wright Smith was wounded at Gettysburg and lost his leg. He later went "Crazy" lured two of his sons away and then shot them, he then shot himself. In the "Muster Roll of Company F, 10th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry Army, Northern Virginia, CSA, Columbia Co., GA(Thomson Guards) it shows: Smith, Wright - Private, May 11, 1861. Wounded in leg, necessitating amputation, date and place not given. On wounded furlough March 1865. Pension states that on July 2, 1863, he hit in leg by shrapnel, just above the ankle of the left leg. Leg was amputated, just above the knee, in January 1893.
