Gilbert reportedly lied about his age in order to join the Marines. He was stationed in Haiti, and then Maryland. He was in Annapolis in 1928, where he met and married my grandmother, Elvira Fouche Riley. Gilbert was discharged shortly thereafter, and he and Elvira moved back to Indiana, settling in Frankfort, Clinton County. They went on to have two sons and one daughter.
Elvira and Gilbert divorced in 1940. He married Louise Scherholz around 1942, and settled in Indianapolis. He was drafted into service again during World War II. After spending time in North Africa and Italy, his unit was sent to England in preparation for D-Day. He was in the second wave that landed at Omaha Beach.
After the war, Gilbert returned home to Indianapolis, and worked as a carpenter. He and Louise divorced, and he had a short-lived third marriage to Charlotte. He was engaged to be married a fourth time, but died one week before the wedding. Gilbert suffered a massive heart attack while at work. He was survived by his three children, his brother Frank, his sister Grace, and several grandchildren.
