Anita Fanoe, 92 a Gonzales native whose family gatherings grew to include 41 great-grandchildren passed away, Thursday October 2, 2008at her home on Fanoe Road.

Mrs. Fanoe remained alert and active enjoying her garden, almost to the time of her death by natural causes. Loved ones were at her bedside.

The matriarch of a family that includes five children, 19 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren, Mrs. Fanoe presided over frequent reunions on the family farm and at the family vacation home in Arroyo Seco.

Anita Marion Rianda was born September 25, 1916, in Gonzales to Henry Rianda, Sr., and Aurelia Tavernetti, dairy farmers who chose to homestead in the Salinas Valley because the hills reminded them of their native Switzerland. Little Anita was the youngest of nine siblings.

She graduated from Gonzales High School in 1934. That same year, she represented the town of Gonzales as hostess of the California Rodeo, even though she was afraid of horses. "When the City Council explained the situation, mom gladly got on board," Tom Fanoe said of his mother. After graduation, for four years, she worked as an accountant for Sneible and Tavernetti in Gonzales.

She married Neil Fanoe in 1939 and the couple celebrated with a reception at the Alpine Tavern in Gonzales. They were married 56 years until Mr. Fanoe's death in 1995. She lived her entire married life on the Fanoe Farm, just northeast of downtown Gonzales. Mrs. Fanoe belonged to numerous bridge groups and the Swiss American Club. She generously supported St. Theodore's Catholic Church.

Mrs. Fanoe is survived by her sister, Irene Hutton, of Springfield, MO; five children, and their spouses: Roberta (Louis) Huntington of Salinas; Neil (Patsy) Fanoe of San Jose; Karen (Tom) Archer of Pleasanton; Tom (Ann) Fanoe of Ross; Andrea Fanoe of Gonzales; and her "adopted" daughter, Barbara Walcom of San Francisco.

Mrs. Fanoe loved and appreciated her friend and care-giver, Rosa Rueda. The names of Mrs. Fanoe's grandchildren are: Chris Huntington; Bonnie Vogel; Nick Huntington; Michelle Beach; Jennifer Wolf; Katie Jaeb; Betsy Kais; Tricia Van Ruler; Neil Fanoe, Jr.; Tim Archer; Andrea Young; Molly Vargas; Roberta Nicknish; Anker Fanoe; Sarah Kaye; Scott Fanoe; Kelly Coleman; Megan Pascoe-Sheppard; and Ryan Sheppard.
