Clarence L. Webb, 91, longtime Independence Funeral Director, died Monday morning at Mercy Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 6, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church with the Reverends Jack and Marilyn Gregory, pastors, officiating. Interment will be at the Mt. Hope Cemetery under the direction of the Penwell-Gabel Webb & Rodrick Chapel of Independence. Friends may call at the funeral home from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 5, 2009 and the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The family has suggested memorial remembrances to the First United Methodist Church and remembrances will be received at the funeral home.

Clarence LeRoy Webb was born August 11, 1917 at Topeka, Kansas, the son of Glen M. Webb and Mary E. (Williamson) Webb. The family moved to Independence in 1922. Mr. Webb attended Independence Schools, graduating from Independence High School in 1935. Mr. Webb served with the United States Navy during World War II for 4 years. He later graduated from Washburn University, and St. Louis College of Mortuary Science. After his schooling he joined his parents in the operation of the Webb Funeral Home. Mr. Webb was active in the merger of the Webb Funeral Home and the Rodrick Funeral Home in 1976.

Clarence was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Independence and was active in the Kansas East Conference of the Church. He served as Chairman of the Building Fund for the addition to the church in 1961.

He had served as Past Commander of the American Legion and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Dewlin-Dix Post 1186 of Independence.

Mr. Webb had served as Past President of the Independence Chamber of Commerce, Past President of the Independence School Board, Past President of the Meadowlark Girl Scout Council, Past Chairman of the Riverside Park Board, Past Chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and Past Chairman of the City Recreation Board.

He had served as Chairman of the Community Chest and Red Cross drives and was Chairman of the Building Fund for the round section of Mercy Hospital in 1960.

Mr. Webb was a member of the Mason Lodge where he had served as Past Master. He was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and had served as Past Patron and was a member of the Mirza Shrine in Pittsburg.

On June 19, 1949 at Independence, Kansas, he was united in marriage to Doris Berry. Mrs. Webb preceded her husband in death on June 5, 1986.

He was united in marriage to Jean Marie Collins in December of 1988. Jean preceded her husband in death in March of 2004.

Survivors include: a daughter, Kathy Webb of Wichita, Kansas; two brothers, William Webb of Lakewood, Colorado and Gerald Webb of Independence, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by a daughter Karen and a brother Richard Webb.
