Here are my notes for Dot, from her entry in my family tree file- Rick Waggener:

Dorothy Alice Waggener Waldsmith was the fifth of six children born to her parents, Jesse David and Annie Eliza Kenner Waggener. She was pretty much always known as "Dot." She was born in the town of Puxico, in Stoddard County, in southeastern Missouri on December 9, 1896. Her parents had moved there fairly recently from Jefferson County, and they lived on a rented farm where her father mostly bought and sold livestock. They were only there for a couple of years, and in about 1898, when her father Jesse enlisted in the army for the Spanish American War, Dot and her mother Annie and siblings went to live with Annie's parents the Kenners, in their home on what was known as Kenner's Hill, just north of the town of Festus, Missouri, in Jefferson County. When Jesse returned from the army, the family lived for a while in nearby St. Francois County, where Jesse worked for a lead mine. In about 1901, the family moved to Elwood, Madison County, Indiana, and were there for at least five years, while her father worked in a factory there. This was about 300 miles north west of Festus, but I know that the family remained close to their grandparents and other relatives in the Festus area. I believe that Dot and her siblings would often spend their summers living with their Kenner grandparents near Festus.

In about 1906 or 1907, Dot and her family returned to the Festus area, where they essentially remained through Dot's childhood. I believe that by 1910 the Kenners gave Dot's parents an acre of land next to their property, and they built a house on it, where they lived until they all left Missouri. Dorothy graduated from Festus High School in 1915, and attended one year of college at the Missouri State Normal School in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. In April of 1915, Dot's older brother Dick, had gone to Detroit, Michigan, where he found work. There was an economic boom going on there at the time. I know that at some point Dorothy and her sister Min, who she was very close to, visited Dick in Detroit. I think that Min stayed and found a job at Western Electric and although Dot went back to Festus initially, she returned shortly and also found a job there, and stayed. Soon after their parents and all their other siblings followed to join them there in Detroit. By the early 1920's they were all living in a house they had purchased together at 201 Farrand Park in Highland Park, Michigan. In 1922 she married James Waldsmith at the Central Woodward Christian Church in Detroit. There were two children born to them, Richard and Celia. Her son Richard tells his story about his mother below. Her husband James died in his early 60's of a heart attack. Dorothy survived him by thirty years.- Rick Waggener

From Richard Waldsmith:

My mother, Dorothy Alice Waldsmith, was born in Missouri in 1896 or 97. She always said 1897 to make her a year younger. She was a very gregarious person and once commented that she would count to 10 and speak up if no one else did. She married my father in 1923 at the Central Woodward Christian Church on Woodward Avenue. She worked for the Graybar Company (which manufactured or distributed electrical appliances) as a comptometer operator (one of the first electrical operated calculators). While she was not an accomplished pianist, she played well enough to "punch the right keys" as she said while Dad played the banjo at parties with a group of their friends where they enjoyed group singing, often of hymns. She took "elocution" lessons at the Chaffee Noble School located in Detroit and enjoyed performing humorous sketches and was often the "entertainment" at various women's groups in Dearborn. Many of the sketches were in Italian or Jewish dialects which would certainly be frowned upon today. She also liked to recite poetry. One of my favorites was "The Cremation of Sam McGee" by Robert W Service. After my father died she sold the house in Dearborn and moved into western Detroit near 6 Mile road into a large two story "Flat" on Baylis St. I think she leased the bottom floor. We lived there for about a year. When I got married she moved to Lake Worth, FL and later to a condo in Winter Park to be near my sister, Ceel. She had a stroke in the fall of 1983 which left her partially paralyzed and some loss of memory. She died there in December 1983 and was buried in Winter Park.
