STUDENT FIREMAN IS BURNED, DIES
a 19-year-old Oklahoma City youth who had an ambition to become a fireman, died Wednesday night of burns he received while fighting a grass fire in Stillwater.
The victim was James R Bergstrand, son of an Oklahoma City fireman, B.R. "Dick" Bergstrand, 5312 N Miller Boulevard.
He was enrolled in Oklahoma A&M's fire protection school. The mishap occurred about 3 pm, Wednesday while Bergstrand was helping fight a grass fire near a Stillwater hatchery. He died at 9pm in a Stillwater hospital.
Stillwater fireman said young Bergstrand became entangled in a booster line and was dragged into the blaze as the fire truck was being moved.
In addition to student fireman, regular Stillwater firemen were on hand to combat the blaze.
Witnesses said the fire truck was moved to prevent it from being surrounded by the grass fire.
Firemen said young Bergstrand refused assistance in disentangling himself from the hose to keep other firemen from being burned while trying to rescue him.
R J Douglas, head of the school's fire protection class, said it was the first serious accident since the school was started in 1938.
The victim is survived by his parents, two sisters, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. L.S Boley, 1819 NW 6, and Mr. and Mrs. Elof Bergstrand, 9 SE 38, and an aunt, Mrs. Bill Pickney, 3201 NW 12.
