Elwood Walter Smith
March 16, 1923 - April 20, 2008

Elwood Walter Smith, beloved cousin, uncle, step-dad, grandpa and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning April 20th, 2008 at his home in Tyler, Texas. He was born on March 16th, 1923 in Ouray, Colorado. Elwood's parents were Ellen (Malloy) Smith and Everett Smith and he had an older brother, Bob. Elwood loved growing up in Ouray. As a youngster, he and all the other children were visited by an Italian Santa Claus pulled by a real sleigh in the snow leaving a gift of fruit and goodies. His grandfather was an old miner from Silverton. He attended Catholic Mass when it was held in Latin. During high school he excelled in football and basketball. He was the youngest member of his brother's band. He worked for his dad's store Nickel-Smith, delivering groceries. He spent summers fishing and swimming in the pool, where he had a record for staying underwater. He met Alma Capone while out with friends exploring Box Canyon. They married after El was drafted into the U.S. Army during WWII where he was stationed at Camp Hale, France and Germany. The couple moved to Chicago where El worked for Central Wax Paper Co., then moved to Montrose and opened up a diner. El and Alma divorced and El met Bonnie Blair (Spivey) when she appeared in his diner kitchen one night. They enjoyed dancing at the Beaumont hotel and fishing. They married and moved to Kansas where he sold life insurance; which was probably his favorite career. Later they moved to California, and then arrived in Grand Junction shortly before Bonnie passed away. El worked as a motel desk clerk, and then he went to work for the GJSD as a janitor. He joined the GJ widow/widower's group where he made many friends, and married Evelyn Harris. They were members of the First Baptist Church of Grand Junction. Together they enjoyed fishing, boating, camping and traveling all over much of the U.S. and also stayed in Europe. They also liked to visit Nevada casinos on Mesa State bus trips. El loved visiting with all his friends and family and getting together to play cards. He was happiest on his boat and driving his car somewhere. In his lifetime he acquired many cherished pet dogs and automobiles. He loved all of his friends and family, as much as he loved living in Colorado. At his request, no service will be scheduled. He will rest at Cedar Hills, next to Bonnie. He is survived by various family members and close friends in Grand Junction, Montrose, Washington, and Texas.
