On January 4, the writer attended the funeral service for cousin Carrie (Carolyn Brandon) Elliott of the city. She was a first cousin of the writer's father and a sister of "Plain Bill" Brandon, once Governor of Alabama. She was also a sister of John Brandon, of Montgomery, Alabama. John Brandon has held the office of State Auditor and State Treasure, alternating from time to time, as far back as the writer can recall.
