Son of Catherine Osborne Barnwell who died in 1824.

He received his early education in Beaufort and apprenticed with Birkenwrath & Lowndes in Charleston at age 15. Later he formed a partnership in rice and cotton with Berkeley Wilkins known as Wilkins & Barnwell, located at 14 East Bay St. Shortly before the war he joined his son in establishing Barnwell & Son, Cotton Factors.

An active rice planter, he owned 440 acres on the Edisto River near Wiltown and managed the planting operations of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Gabriel Henry Manigault, nee Ann Manigault Heyward

At the beginning of the war he was considered one of the wealthiest members of his family, having an estate of $300,000.

In 1835 Edward Barnwell III married Margaret Manigault, daughter of Gabriel Henry and Ann Heyward Manigault. It was through this marriage that Edward Barnwell III received Prospect Plantation. He later changed the name to Prospect Hill. The plantation house was burned by Union troops in February 1865. Edward Barnwell III built another house on the property in 1878.

Treasurer of the South Carolina Agricultural Society, 1844 - 1860
Representative to the Diocesan Convention from St. Peter's Church, Charleston and Christ Church, Wiltown
A member of the Honor Guard at the funeral of John C. Calhoun
