He worked in auto parts sales beginning January 1946 in Riverside, California. The store was originally named Allbright's; in 1962 it changed its name to Car Parts. He rose to be manager of the store.

Richard retired 31 Mar 1978 and he and his wife moved to Victor, Idaho. He moved to Susanville, California in October 1993, following the death of his wife, to be closer to his daughters and their families.

Reminiscences by Richard H Rhode 5 Jun 2008:
I remember in September 1998 Dad and I were in Missoula on a fishing trip, and we were in the 4B's Restaurant across the parking lot from the motel at about nine a.m., when I looked out the window and said, "Gee, that looks like your brother!" Then the man entered the restaurant and and walked around as if looking for someone. I said, "That sure does look like your brother!" Dad looked, and said, "That is my brother!" He was flabbergasted.
I had spoken with my uncle, earlier, advising him of our plans to go fishing, and had urged him to come visit us, but he hadn't said that he would. It was a complete surprise. He had driven from his home in Northern California to Havre, Montana.. From there he had driven to Missoula, where the motel clerk had advised him that we were in the restaurant. If the weather had been clear we would have already left to go fishing. Uncle Dick said that he was prepared to sit in the lobby all day waiting for us.
We didn't go fishing that day. The brothers had a great time seeing each other, and touring Missoula together. It was great. I always enjoyed talking with Uncle Dick. He called me "Hamilton," and I told him jokes. He always said he couldn't get a word in when he was talking with Dad; Dad said the exact same thing about him.
Did you ever hear the car horn story? Dad was visiting Richard years ago, and his brother commented that Dad's car horn was not very loud. They proceeded to drive into the hills, until Dad was directed to stop at a derelict Honda parked in a field. Uncle Dick opened the hood and removed the horn. Just then the property owner happened by, and asked, "What are you doing, Dick?" Uncle Dick explained, and the man said, "Oh, okay then." Uncle Dick installed the horn in Dad's car, and Dad used it for years, even transferring it to his next car.
