Ernie was the 5th of 8 children born to Lloyd and Grace Bailey. Married Wanda E. Jespersen 30 January 1948 in Worthington, MN.

Ernie enlisted in the Navy in Sep 1944. He was a cook on a mine sweeper in the South Pacific. After being discharged in Sep 1946 he joined the Air Force in Oct 1947 at March AFB, CA and was a crew chief on L19's, L20's and helicopters. Ernie was discharged again in Mar 1950. In Aug 1955 he enlisted in the Army and was an office machine repairman and supervisor. He spent his last year in the service as a recruiter and retired in 1971. During over 20 years in the 3 services he was stationed at over 14 military bases. He retired as a Sgt. 1st Class.

Obituary: No services are scheduled for retired Army Sgt. 1st Class Ernest L. Bailey, 1219 W Cucharras Street. Mr. Bailey, 56, died Thursday at his home. He was born Aug. 5, 1927 in Spencer, Iowa. He also served in the Navy and Air Force. His tours of duty included service in Korea, Turkey, Germany and France. He was married in 1948 to Wanda Jespersen of Spencer. Survivors are his wife Wanda. three sons, Michael of Colorado Springs and Jeff and Bill, both of Denver, a daughter Diane Vizza of Reynoldsville, Pa, five brothers, Fred of Spencer, Ralph, Dale and Les, all of Colorado Springs, and Glen of Davenport, Iowa, a sister Phoebe Heikens of Spencer, and two grandchildren.
