Samuel Wilson Clement, the most honored and beloved citizen of Wallace, Duplin county, died at his home on the morning of October 4. He had been in failing health for some time, and his death, while expected is none the less sorrowful to his many friends who loved him almost as a father.
Mr. Clement was born in Granville county, and was in the 79th year of his age. He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Margaret Spear. who died in 1865. In 1867 he was married to Miss Anna Bryan, who survives him. He is also survived by seven children, Messrs. John B. Clement of Spartanburg S. C; W. J. Clement, U. S. Army, California; Philip M. Clement, Charleston, S. C; R.T. Clement, Wilmington; A. O. Clement, Goldsboro, and Misses Jennie Gooch and Anna Bryan Clement.
Mr. Clement was graduated from, the University of North Carolina in 1859 and spent his life as a teacher. His idea of teaching was primarily the building of character, and he was untiring in his efforts to reach his ideals. He prepared many of the leading men and women in the State for college, and some of the minds that he has trained for the problems of life are today solving the problems of a nation in our Senate halls.
Mr. Clement was an elder in Duplin Roads Presbyterian Chuch and lived a life that was worthy as and example to those who were around him. He was a Christian gentleman, and whatever of goodness, whatever of purity, may be found in the community is more due to him than to any other one man.
