Born in 1835 to parents Anthony John Windell, Sr. (1794-1853; captain in the Black Hawk War) and Elizabeth "Betty" Cunningham (1802-1876); siblings: Thomas (b. 1821), William (1822-1905), Rachel (1827-1906), Mary Catherine (b. 1831), John (1832-1862), Sarah Jane (1837-1898), Malinda (1840-1898), and Anthony (1842-1915; Co. K, 38TH IND INF & Co. B, 53RD IND INF).

Commissioned 2ND LT of Co. K, 38TH IND INF on Sept. 18, 1861; promoted to 1ST LT on Oct. 10, 1862 and CAPT on Nov. 11, 1862; resigned, Oct. 29, 1863; wife Harriett E. (1837-1909); member of Indiana G.A.R. Post #191 (W.L. Sanderson Post) in New Albany, IN.
