Sarah Green walker 68, a resident businesswoman and active church worker in Afton for many years, died Saturday, Sept 22, 1973 at her home in Afton after a serious illness.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Afton First Ward Chapel, with Counselor Gordon M. Tueller conducting. Burial was in the Afton Cemetery.
She was born Nov 14, 1904 at Rexburg, Idaho to Robert Dyer and Martha Jane Farnsworth Green. Her early years were spent in Teton Basin, and even after the family moved to Menan, Idaho, she spent many hours there riding horses and hiking in the Teton Mountains. She attended school in Menan, where the children rode their horses from the ranch several miles. She graduated form Midway High School, then attended Albion State Normal where she received a teaching certificate. She taught school in Menan and Parker, Idaho.
She married Lorenzo Walker Sept 2, 1927 in the Salt Lake Temple. Their first home was in Salt Lake City, where her husband worked i a grocery store. They then moved to Rexburg so Lorenzo could qualify himself to teach in Idaho, then they lived at Grant where he taught for four years.
In 1931 with their first two children, they moved to Evanston, Wyo., where Lorenzo taught school. In 1933 Sarah contracted typhoid fever while visiting her parents in Menan, but recovered.
In 1933 they purchased a little variety store in Afton and moved here. They have lived here ever since and operated the store until 1961, when they turned its management over to a son-in-law, John Haws,so they could accept a two-year mission call to the Cumorah Mission for the LDS Church. While serving they were assigned to be guides and custodians of the Joseph Smith home in Palmyra, N.Y.
Upon their return home they took Sarah's aging parents, who were in ill health into their home and they cared for them the remaining years of their lives.
After the death of Sarah's parents, the Walkers sold their variety store to Mr Haws, and decided to go south for the winters. They moved to LaVerkin, Utah, and worked in the St. George LDS Temple as officiators.
Early this year, Sarah became ill and they returned to Afton for necessary surgery, planning to return to their temple work. She died 20 days after her 46th wedding anniversary.
Sarah was very active in the LDS Church, along with working in the store much of the time. She served as Relief Society president on two different occasions, was a visiting teacher a good part of her life, and was also active in stake and ward Primary and Sunday School organizations. For many years she sang with the ward choir and the Canto Chorus. She lived to see her two sons serve on missions and all of her five children marry in the temple.
Sarah had a talent for winning friends, a loving personality and a zest for life that drew people close to her. She was eager to serve, to help, to love and to comfort. She set high standards of behavior for her family to follow.
She is survived by her husband, Lorenzo, Afton; her five sons and daughters, Mrs Ray (Maralyn) Haroldsen, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Mrs McKay (Rene') Burton, New Orleans, La; Robert and Mrs John (Beverly) Haws, Afton and Marion P., Blackfoot, Idaho. Also surviving are two brothers, Robert Dennis Green, Hamer, Idaho, and Philo Austin Green, Sacramento, Calif,; and 32 grandchildren.
