Catherine Margaret Vaught was born ca. 1715 in Germany and died circa Jun, 1793, when her will was proved in Augusta County, Virginia.

She married Christian Clements, who died before Mar 15, 1783.

She immigrated with her parents on the ship Charming Betty out of London, arriving Oct 11, 1733.

Catherine Clemans/Cleming is cited in Virginia Publick Claims for Augusta County, VA (compiled and transcribed by Janice L. Abercrombie and Richard Slatten, Iberian Publishing Company, Athens, Georgia) for the period 28 Feb 1781 to 23 Jun 1781 as selling provisions to "Col. White's Regiment of Light Dragoons, the prisoners of War and [illeg] in Staunton, also the militia." (pp. 10, 11, 12) Accordingly, a supplemental application for Larry P. Cornwell has been approved from the Sons of the American Revolution to recognize her service. Specifically, Catherine Clemans sold "1 beef £450." Later, from 28 February to 13 October 1781, Catherine Cleming sold "1 beef."

The following is cited as reasonable proof that this Catherine was the wife or widow of Christian Clemons of Augusta County, and the mother of Eve Clemens, who married Philip Barger.

A genealogical ledger maintained by Wesley Kenerly Helm (1822-1871), who was the grandson of Philip Barger, documented Phillip's marriage to Eve Clemens on the second page of his 32-page ledger.

Christian Clemons of Augusta County, Virginia wrote his will on 10 Feb 1780, listing his wife as Catherine and leaving one-fifth of his estate to Phillip Berger & his wife. David McNelly
George Trout
Henry Lyner (Henry Liner, pages 12, 13)

The heading of list 2 reads, "A return of the Taxable property in the Bounds of Captains Givens Y. Rankins Company taken by Alexn. Roberts on agreeable to Order of March Court 1783." She is listed as a white tithable over the age of 21 years (with a 1 in the column). The column entitled "Negroes above the age of 16 years" had a 1 in the column. There was no mark in the column "Negroes under the age of 16 years," no horses, and in the pounds, shillings, and pence columns were blank, 10, and blank, indicating a tax of 10 shillings.
