Charles "Chuck" Fehely
Aug. 16, 1930 - Aug. 14, 2008 Resident of Castro Valley Chuck Fehely, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and coach, was born in Alameda and raised in Berkeley. He graduated from Berkeley High School where he excelled in football and other sports, earning a football scholarship to St. Mary's College. In addition, he attended Santa Rosa Junior College and is listed in their Hall of Fame. In 1951, he joined the Army and served in the 82nd Airborne for three years where he also played football and baseball. Upon discharge he attended the University of Oregon as well as San Jose State where he received his bachelor's degree. He is survived by his wife of nearly fifty years, Selma Fehely, son Michael Fehely and wife Kathy, daughter Paula DelaRiva and husband Dan, daughter Laura Donohue and husband Michael and daughter Kathy Dillingham. He was the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren: Tommy, Ryan, Jill, Brad, Evan, Mary, Morgan, Troy and Shelby. He was their biggest fan and loved to brag about them. He worked for Alameda County for 30 years as a Deputy Probation Officer. After earning a credential he retired in 1982 to become a teacher and coach at Encinal High School, Castro Valley High and Menlo Atherton. He was devoted to and loved by his family and friends as well as the many students and athletes he coached. He was an advocate for Civil Rights, the ending of war, and was often quoted as saying, "Look for good and you will find it". In lieu of flowers, the family will be establishing a scholarship fund in Coach Fehely's name for student athletes at Castro Valley High. Visitation will be held at Jess C. Spencer Mortuary, 21228 Redwood Rd., Castro Valley on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 from 5-8 PM. The funeral mass will be on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Grace Church, 3433 Somerset Ave., Castro Valley. Jess C. Spencer Mortuary, Inc 510-581-9133
