Elijah Carter was born in Pennsylvania, the son of Nathan Carter and Abigail Chew. Elijah was the fifth child out of 19 siblings, by 3 different mothers. His parents were born in New Jersey. He married Maria Wilkinson in Bartholomew Co, In 6 Dec 1826. They were the parents of 7 children. Elijah Carter was the first class leader of the Carter's chapel M.E. church for 30 years. For many years this church was attached to the Columbus circuit, and afterward to the Taylorsville circuit.
