"In the fall of 1775, Captain William Proctor and his wife, Mary, with three children, found their way through the forests to Washington from Chelmsford, Mass. He settled near Ashuelot Pond. He lived in that part of town many years, but finally removed to the east part of the town, where his son resided, and died February 19, 1846, at the age of ninety-nine years, lacking one day. Captain Proctor was prominent in town affairs and during the War of the Revolution was a soldier in the American army."
