He was born Nov. 15, 1932 in Mitchell County, the son of the late Ed Newsome McBee and Nellie Snyder McBee.
He was a graduate of Mars Hill College and Appalachian State University. He began his teaching career at Cannon High School in Kannapolis and then later at Odell Elementary School in Cabarrus County. He then served a tour of duty in the U.S. Army. Afterward, he returned to teaching at Glen Alpine Elementary School and finally as an elementary school principal in the Catawba Schools system.
The funeral service is at 5 p.m. today at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, 1748 Dale Earnhardt Blvd., Kannapolis officiated by Chaplain Fred Moretz.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the National Cemetery, Salisbury with military honors. The family received friends Saturday at the funeral home.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Doris Barrier McBee; two sons, James K. McBee Jr. of Nashua, N.H. and David E. McBee and wife, Debra of Lexington; a grandson, David Jerald McBee; three step-grandchildren, Smith Hedrick, Steve Ball and Andrew Ball; one step-great-grandchild, Ashton Ball; four sisters, Marjorie Pittman, Faye McBee and Pearl McBee, all of Spruce Pine and Loris Whitaker of Black Mountain; one nephew, Cliff Pittman; and two nieces, Pat Parker and Renee Ensley.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
