Born Ruth Walsh Lee in Baltimore and known throughout her life as Sallie, she was raised in Perryman. She was a 1950 graduate of Notre Dame Preparatory School and earned an associate's degree at what was then Harcum Junior College in Bryn Mawr, PA. After her marriage in 1958 to James T. Van Rensselaer II, an engineer, she raised four sons while moving the family around the country nine times until her marriage ended in divorce in 1972. She then moved to Bel Air and became a secretary to the president of John Carroll High School. She remained at the school in various administrative capacities for 25 years until she retired. She put four sons through high school and college while remaining active in historical preservation, bridge, politics, antique auctions and furniture refinishing. She was a former chairwoman of the Harford County Committee of the Maryland Historical Trust, a member of the Harford County Historical Preservation Commission, and vice chairwoman of Friends of Jerusalem Mill, a historical grist mill on the Gunpowder Falls.
