Catherine Lash Martin was born Feb. 13, 1833, in Stark County, Ohio, the daughter of Andrew Lash and Elizabeth Younkman Lash. Catherine married James W. Martin, son of Andrew Martin and Catherine Wickey Martin. Catherine and James were married May 25, 1854. After they were married, they moved to Kosciusco County in Indiana. James and Catherine had ten children, eight born in Indiana and two in Kansas. They were Mary Elizabeth, Therisa Jane, Andrew Jackson, Elsie Dana, Margaret Ann, Sary Adline, Catherine Celesta, William James, Lilly Caroline, and Malinda Rosetta.
The story goes they farmed in Indiana near the cranberry bogs. Then they came to Kansas in a covered wagon in 1871 before the year of the grasshoppers. They lived near Richland, Kansas. In 1873 they moved to a farm in Marion Township, Douglas County, Kansas, near the town of Clinton. Their post office address was Alladin, Kansas, which was only in existence from 1875 to 1881.
James W. Martin died Feb. 2, 1875, before his last child was born in September. Catherine farmed with the help of her children until she sold the farm and moved to Lawrence about 1883. She married for the second time Charles Kleinfogel Sept. 10, 1889. They moved to Leavenworth County, Kansas, where Charles Kleinfogel died March 10, 1895. At that time Catherine moved back to Lawrence and lived with her son, Andrew J. Martin, until her death Feb. 8, 1916.
