Bismarck, N.D. --- Services for Hiram T. Waterland, 61, former Black Hills area resident who died Monday at his home in Bismarck, was set for 2 p.m. today at Boelter Funeral Home in Bismarck.

Burial, with military graveside rites, will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, S.D.

Waterland was born Oct. 7, 1928, at Central City, S.D., to Arnold J. and Maude (Bickerdyke) Waterland. He graduated from Lead (S.D.) High School in 1946 and served in the U.S. Army in Europe from 1946 to 1952.

He attended South Dakota School of Mines & Technology and in 1955 graduated from Black Hills State College with a degree in education. He was elected to Who's Who in American Colleges & Universities.

He married Norma Karinen July 17, 1955, at Deadwood. He was a second lieutenant with the South Dakota Army National Guard, was manpower officer at Bismarck for the North Dakota National Guard and was liaison officer at the U.S. Military Academy for the Army Reserve. He retired in 1988 as a full colonel.

He also taught high school mathematics in Beaverton, Ore., worked to stints as a claims representative for the Social Security Administration in Minot, N.D., was Homestake Hospital administrator in Lead, S.D., worked with the North Dakota Selective Service Board and North Dakota Department of Health & Human Services.

In 1969, he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a master's degree in public administration and served a one-year internship at Harrisburg, Penn.

At Bismarck he was a member of the McCabe United Methodist Church, the Kiwanis Club and the Masonic Lodge.

Surviving are his wife, Norma of Bismarck; two sons; one grandson; a sister, Helen K. Fahrni of Aiea, Hawaii; and a brother, Joel Waterland of Lead.
