RICHARD L. HILL IV, age 78 of East Third St., Corning, NY, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at home. Richard was born January 23, 1925 in Corning, the son of the late Richard L. and Ella Mae (McIlwain) Hill. He was a graduate of Corning Free Academy and attended the University of Pittsburgh for one year as an Army Air Corps Cadet. Richard married Mary Catherine Flynn in Corning, September 23, 1944. Mary Catherine predeceased him on August 8, 1992. They had been married for 48 years. Richard was a veteran of WWII, serving as an aviation cadet, and then as an aerial gunner on a B-29, serving with the 383rd Bombardment Group (Heavy). He was retired from Corning, Inc., with over 44 years of active service. He received his 50 year pin in 1995. He spent his entire career at Fallbrook plant, as a Gaffer and a Supervisor. Richard was a life member of the John P. Eaton Post American Legion, and had served as Commander. He was also a life member of Crystal City VFW. Richard was the Chairman of the Graves Restoration committee of the United Veterans Organization for 25 years, responsible for the placement of grave markers and US Flags in various area cemeteries. Richard was proud of his military and veteran service, and especially proud that his sons, along with his own service, had over 100 years of military duty serving this country. Two of his sons have also served as Commanders of the John P. Eaton American Legion Post. Richard is survived by his ten children, Michael (Mary) of Cary, NC, Brian of Corning, Francis (Sandy) of Lexington, KY, Paula Hill (Thomas Eagen) of Elmira Heights, Patricia (Rick) Baker of Dallas, TX, Richard (Robin) of Savona, NY, Christopher (Debra) of Painted Post, NY, Thomas (Michele) of Elmira, NY, Kathryn Hill Fiorillo of Corning, and Vincent (Candice) of Lindley, NY; brother, Paul (Mary Agnes) Hill of Corning; sister, Claire Wilson of Painted Post; brother-in-law, Dr. John T. Flynn of Hampton, CT; 28 grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his special friend, Lucille Radeszsisky of Corning. He was predeceased by his sister, Lorene Travis of Corning, NY; and two nephews, Sgt. Jon Paul Travis and Alvin Travis, Jr. The family would also wish to thank his golf buddies, George Calo, Rocky Puccio, and John Drozd for their friendship to our father and the great moments they gave him on the golf course. Family and friends are invited to call at Carpenter's Funeral Home, 14 E. Pulteney St., Corning, on Thursday, March 13, 2003 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A service of Thanksgiving will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, Corning on Friday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery Annex, Corning.
