GEORGE FORTNER IS DEAD

Word has been received that Geo. Washington Fortner died at his home in El Reno Oklahoma Friday evening, Jan 15, aged 76 years and 10 months. The announcement of his death will grieve the many warm friends of Mr. Fortner in Knoxville and Marion County.

Deceased was the son of William and Mary (Newman) Fortner and grandson of the late Rev. Geo. Newman. In the year 1871, just after the death of his first wife, Mary Frances, who lived only one year after their marriage, Mr. Fortner gave his heart to God and united with the Methodist Episcopal church, his pastor then the Rev. Alfred McClintick, of Bethelville, now long deceased. The subject of this sketch lived in Knoxville and vicinity, excepting a few years in Pottawatamie county, then back to Knoxville. The past twenty four years were spent in Oklahoma, that being his home until the time of his death. He was here five years ago to visit his old time friends and relatives. The relatives were not apprized of his critical illness until the sickness and death of his youngest sister, Mrs. J. H. Bennett, who died Dec. 2, 1925. From that time on he sank rapidly. His brother John A. Fortner, of Minneapolis, Minn., had started to visit his brother, but on arriving in Des Moines learned that his sister, Mrs. Bennett had just passed away. He remained for her funeral and then went on to El Reno to be at the bedside of his brother, who lived one week after he arrived there. Mr. Fortner is survived by his wife and a large family of children, also two sisters and two brothers. The sisters are Mrs. Barbara Bivans and Mrs. Hannah Burdick, of Knoxville, also Mrs. Sarah Hodges and Mrs Bennett both deceased. The brothers are John A. Fortner, of Minneapolis, and Flave Fortner of Knoxville.

The funeral was held Sunday, Jan. 17, in El Reno and the many beautiful flowers tell much of the high esteem in which he was held and regardless of the rainy day, a large gathering of sorrowing friends and relatives met to pay their last respects. He was laid to rest by the side of his daughter, Golda, in the El Reno Cemetery near by. Mr. Fortner was the cousin of Will, John and Wash Fortner, of Knoxville, and has many nephews and nieces in this city.
