Granite Falls, N.C. - The funeral service for Thelma Sherrill Turnmyre will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, in the Philadelphia Lutheran Church in Granite Falls.
Burial will follow in Sunset Hills Cemetery, also in Granite Falls, under the direction of Bass-Smith Granite Funeral Services. The Rev. John Bell will conduct the services.

Mrs. Turnmyre, 92, a resident of Granite Falls, died at 2:30 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009, surrounded by family and friends in Opelousas, La. She leaves behind to her family and all who knew her and got to know her in Louisiana an incredible legacy of faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, her strength and her never-ending courage. She changed many lives in a wonderful and positive way, including those of her young caregivers as she inspired them to make career decisions and become CANs.

She was best remembered in the Hickory and Granite Falls area as the best shoe saleslady that Melville's Catawba Mall had. Then, her loyal customers followed her to Melville's in downtown Hickory so she could show them what clothing to buy. Customers would wait for Thelma to help them.

Survivors include her daughter, Sue Turnmyre Elder and husband, Jim, of Opelousas, La.; brothers, Max Sherrill and wife, Joan, and Tommy Sherrill; and sister, Mary Ann Baugh, all of Granite Falls; one grandson, Jason Spain and wife, Jill, of Midlothian, Texas; and three great-grandchildren, Tommy, Tyler and Triston. She also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews and one very special and devoted friend, Jane Teague Laney.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Pete Turnmyre; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Sherrill; brother, Ralph Sherrill; and a sister, Kathleen Frye.

Visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at the Philadelphia Lutheran Church in Granite Falls.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Philadelphia Lutheran Church General Fund. The address is P.O. Box 278, Granite Falls, N.C. 28630.
