Susan Elizabeth was the daughter of Jonathan Wade H. Tipton and Ann Catherine Freshour.

Susan met her husband, Zachariah Harbin Stanley, on a trip home to Tennessee, while he was installing steam mills on her parents' farm. They were active in the Temperance movement.

Their children were Grace Tipton,wife of Guy Clark Stevens, Earl Norris, Zachariah Jay and Ross Keeley Stanley.
