"And on September 18, 1901, another child was born, another boy, and they called him William Ray....We called him Ray because he was always smiling....
William Ray Kern, who was the fifth boy of the Kern family, started in his life work when a boy in Vallejo, at common work. After graduating from common school he started high school and ran a shore boat to defray his educational expenses. He ran the shore boat at night. His work was to take those across to Mare Island who worked at night, then tie to the quay wall and bring them back in the morning after their shifts were finished. So Ray had time to sleep and rest.
After graduating from high school, he worked for the Calso Water Works Company for one year. Then he moved to Berkeley where he attended U.C. Later he engaged in various kinds of work. Ray was a partner with Bill Bailey, then ran a candy truck between Delhi and Los Angeles. Then he landed a job with the Winslow Diesel Gas Engine Company in Oakland for a few years until the shop was moved to San Francisco. After that he worked with the Caterpiller Company as a salesman. He had a territory of five counties. Ray is full of life and energy. He lived in Ukiah and then Napa.
His wife was Mary Gilbert of Oklahoma and they had one child, a girl named Mary Jean.
