In August 1943, he went overseas and served in North Africa followed by several months of fighting at Anzio, up through Italy within 20 miles of Florence, and was in the invasion of southern France. On September 4th, 1944 he was wounded in eastern France and returned to the United States.

Private Thomas A. Blackstock was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and the European- Mediterranean campaign ribbon for his service in Africa, Sicily, Italy and France,.

He married Edna Lucile McPherson Blackstock May 17, 1945.
