He was the son of Jackson C. "Jack" or "J C" Harrell and Sarah Elizabeth "Sally" (Moore) Harrell. As the eldest child and only son, he became the man of the family when his father was struck and killed by lightning when Almer was just 14 years old.

He married Nettie Etter about 1904 in Wise County, Texas. They were the parents of Savell Lorel, Alma Lavelle, and Goldia "Goldie" Harrell. They divorced about 1908.

He married Selena Potts on Feb. 8, 1917, in Waurika, Jefferson, Oklahoma. Whether there were any children to this union is not known, nor is the method of dissolution of their marriage.

He married Nona Isabell Dicky about 1926 in Texas. They were the parents of Almer William Jr., Forest and Hobert Grant Harrell.
