Joseph appears as both "Welch" and "Welsh" depending on the record being consulted. He was listed as "Welch" in the 1850 U.S. Census for Guilford Twp., Medina County, Ohio and for the 1860 U.S. Census for the town of Seville, also in Medina County. He was shown residing in the household of his father, Cornelius--a farmer--and mother, Sally, plus 7 siblings. Joseph's year of birth has been recorded as 1838, 1840, and 1844, depending on which document is being consulted. During the Civil War he enlisted for a 3-month term of service in the 84th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, May 28, 1862, and was mustered into Company G., June 10, 1862. Joseph was mustered out Sept. 20, 1862. He has no pension file record. Dying from an unrecorded cause, Sept. 1, 1866, presumably in Medina County, Ohio, he was buried at Old Town Cemetery in the City of Medina County, Ohio. He never married. He is carried on the Works Progress Administration map of veterans'burials as "Welch" although the Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers, Vol. VI, p. 633, carried him as "Welch." A brother, James Cornelius Welch, who served in the 8th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, died at Gettysburg, PA from wound(s), July 5, 1863, at 21 years of age.
