Retired Navy Gunners Mate John Thomas Ayers, 80, of Charleston, a retired federal service employee in ordnance transport with the Naval Weapons Station, died Wednesday in a local hospital. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Pinecrest Baptist Church. Burial, directed by Stuhr's North Area Chapel of North Charleston, will be in Live Oak Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Ayers was born in Blenheim, a son of James B. Ayers and Sudie Emanuel Ayers. He was a Navy veteran. He was a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Thelma Davis Cutrell Ayers; three stepdaughters, Barbara Wren of Moncks Corner, Janet Sigmund of Medford, Wis., and Sherran Myers of Charleston; a sister, Eleanor Swett of Bennettsville; and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
