Thomas Henry Gilbert was born the son of John Gilbert (1811 - 1876) and Martha Allen (1820 - ). He married 21 Feb 1867 in Coweta Co., Ga. to Permelia Caroline Dunn (1845 - 1934). Their children were Luther Alexander Gilbert (1867 - 1926), James Henry "Jim" Gilbert (1868 - 1936), Ida Laura Gilbert (1871 - 1961), Beneta "Neta" Margaret Gilbert (1874 - 1958), Martha Ella Gilbert (1876 - 1965), Alice Finch Gilbert (1878 - 1968) and Bessie Gilbert (1887 - 1971). In the Civil War he served in 1861-62 in 7th Georgia Infantry, Co. A. By 1864 he was serving in the 1st GA (Fannin's) Reserves Co. as a 2nd Lieutenant Jr. and 3rd Lieutenant. In the 22 Aug 1910 "Application for Pension by a Widow Under Act of 1910 - Questions for Applicant" Permelia says Thomas enlisted in 1861 in Coweta County, GA in Co. A, 7th Georgia Infantry." his widow "States that he surrendered first at Appomatox on 7 April 1865; second at Albany, GA 1 May 1862. Joined Co. A 1st GA Reserves after a year of illness beginning 29 May 1862." The application gives date of their marriage as Jan. 1867 and date of Thomas' death as June 1888 in Meriwether County, GA, Newnan. Value of household goods $150. Other Civil War documents show Thomas was 5 ft. 10 in., dark complexion, dark hair, and dark eyes. After the war he worked as a farmer as shown on further census records. His wife Permelia was the daughter of James Hardy Dunn (1826 - ) and Armantha Bennetta Bingham (1828 - 1880) and granddaughter of Elijah Bingham (1783-1860).
