He was married in 1787 in Newbuy, Orange, Vermont to Lydia White. Eight children were born to this union:

2. Merrill Abbott (1790-1794)
3. James Abbott (1792-1870)
4. Elizabeth Abbott (1794-1834)
5. Mary R. Abbott Bailey (1795-1834)
6. Ebenezer Abbott (1797-1873)
7. Dr. Nicholas Abbott, MD (1799-1871)
8. Sarah Abbott (1802-1850)
Bancroft enlisted in the United States Army on 13 April 1778 in Captain Timothy Baron's Company and served until 1 April 1779.
