Thelma Viola Winegar, 93, of Madras, died Aug. 25 at the Mt. View Living Center.
A funeral service was held Aug. 28 at Driskill Memorial Chapel with grandson Kevin Dahlen officiating. Interment was at the Prairie City Cemetery.
Mrs. Winegar was born July 19, 1911, in Suplee, Ore., to Charles and Edith (Bolsby) Garner. Her mother died when she was 12 years old and her only brother, Ralph, died in 1942 while crossing the Snake River on a horse.
She married Charles Raymond Winegar in Crook County Oct. 20, 1930. They had eight children. Her husband was tragically killed in a logging accident in 1952, leaving her to raise the children.
Mrs. Winegar has resided in Redmond since 1946, until the last few years when she was at a care facility in Madras.
She was an active 4-H leader for many years.
After her husband died, she left the role of homemaker to work in grading potatoes, preparing turkeys for market and later as a cook and assistant at the Redmond Heights Nursing Home.
Mrs. Winegar loved to travel, visit many sites with the Golden Age Club and be with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also had a green thumb and took great pride in planting and cultivating her beautiful flower beds and gardens. She was a good seamstress and cook.
Survivors include two sons, Raymond of Prairie City and Charles of Malotias; four daughters, Ella Mae McMullen of Arizona, Latrona Smith of Eagle Creek, Viola Rose of Las Vegas, Nev., and Vanda Winegar Recek of Lebanon; 23 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one brother, one daughter and one son.
