He was educated in Springfield, MO., and graduated from Marionville Collegiate Institute. He read law with W.O. Butler at Marionville and was admitted to practice in 1887. He opened an office in Mt. Vernon, MO. and served as a Prosecuting Attorney of Lawrence County, MO. from 1892-1894.
He married Fannie Porter in 1890 and they had one child: Mildred E. (Johnson), married to Hal B. Johnson in 1913. At the time of his death he was owner of McPherson/Porter Abstract Books and also provide farm loans.
