Member of Co. B, 188 Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry in Civil War; enlisted 24 June 1864, discharged 22 Dec 1865.

Bio info per Dennis Brandt:
In 1860, he was a carpenter living with his parents in Saville Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 11" tall and had dark hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Carlisle February 24, 1864, as an unassigned private with the 3rd Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery (152nd Pa). Because of over recruiting, James was among a large group that, on April 1, 1864, transferred to the 188th Pennsylvania Infantry with James going into Co. B. He was promoted to corporal June 1, 1865, to sergeant November 5, 1865, and honorably discharged with his company December 14, 1865, at City Point (Hopewell), Virginia.

He married Lavina A. Sheaffer in 1873 and fathered Harvey O. (b. 07/23/73), Charles Seibert (b. 04/10/75), James Paden (b. 08/07/77), Mary E. (b. 12/08/79 - married William W. Black), and Thomas (b. @1881).
