Howard T. Bunge, 72, Washington, died Wednesday, April 1, 1998. Mr. Bunge was a member of the U.S. Air Force's historic first pilot training class. He was born September 12, 1925, in Washington, the son of Walter C. Bunge and wife Henrietta, nee Clyce. Mr. Bunge was 18 years old when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps aviation cadet program. He reported for duty in September, 1943, and completed basic training at Biloxi Field, Mississippi. As a lieutenant, he started flight training at Randolph Field, Texas, near San Antonio, in September, 1946, in the first Air Force class. Before that it was the Army Air Corps. His class started with 502 members, including 28 from foreign countries. Only 175 completed primary and advanced flight training. Mr. Bune(sic) earned his wings in October, 1947.He was qualified to fly many Air Force aircraft. Most of his flight time was in multi-engine airplanes. He piloted aircraft all over the world. Mr. Bunge earned bachelor and master degrees while in the Air Force. After returning from Vietnam, where he was under fire on several occasions, Mr. Bunge was awarded the Bronze Star medal. In 1970, after a two-year stint with the Pentagon, Mr. Bunge took voluntary retirement as a lieutenant-colonel after 27 years in the military.
He returned to Washington in 1981. He taught trap and skeet shooting at East Central College, and was very active in shooting as a sport. Mr. Bunge was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Linda Seeck, Washington; three daughters, Susan Putzell and husband Ned, Atlanta, Georgia, Robin Bowers and husband Hal, Columbia, South Carolina, and Angela Bunge, of the home; one sister, Hazel Schaffner and husband James, Edmond, Oklahoma; his mother-in-law, Viola Seeck, Washington; one grandchild; other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 4, at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Washington. Interment was in the church cemetery. Memorials to Sat. Francis Borgia Grade School are preferred. The Bunge family was served by Miller Funeral Home, Washington.
