Gordon had risen in rank of Sergeant when he and others in his unit were killed while serving overseas on April 2, 1945. After failed attempts to locate his family, the military made an 'administrative decision' to him in buried at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville, KY when his body was returned to the States.

Gordon's father William was one-half Osage & Quapaw, therefore, Gordon and his siblings were a fourth. He is listed as such on the Osage Tribal records.

Shot down aboard a B-25 Mitchell on a mission to strafe Japanese targets in the southwest area of Formosa (Taiwan) during World War II.

The crew killed were:

2nd Lt. Harold R Preis
Flt Off. Felix Tyll
Sgt. Joseph G Bratton
Cpl. Richard F LaRue
Cpl. Russell A Schuh
