Benjamin Clark HOWLAND enlisted in the Civil War twice. He was a Pvt. in William A. Mowry's Co. K,, 11th Regiment of RI Fort. He enrolled the second time 28th day of SEP 1864. He was a Corporal in Capt. James N. (Levis?) Co. H, 2nd Regiment of Conn Heavy Artillery. He was honorably discharged 18th of AUG 1865 at Fort Ethan Allen. From the book THE HOWLANDS OF AMERICA "He was in the Battle of Petersburg, at Hatcher's Run, VA., at Weldon's Plank Rd., etc. At the capture of Petersburg, a bible in his breat pocket was penetrated by a spent ball, which probably saved his life.At the Battle of Sailor's Creek he was struck and bears a scar on his left shoulder but was not disabled. At Lee's surrender his knapsack was shattered to fragments. While in the Service he was not excused from duty for a day, but in consequence of hardship endured he has been an invalid for some years."
While in the Service Benjamin contracted Tuberculosis (or Consumption, as it was called. He lingered for some years but it finally killed both Benjamin and his wife, Alice Jane Fenner.
