She was the daughter of Jesse Jefferson Woods and Hester Bridges. Her father was born in Illinois, her mother in Ohio. They married on 19 Sep 1844 at Green County, Wisconsin and are enumerated on the 1850 census at Cadiz, Green, WI with daughter Huldy J., age 5, and son James, age 0. Her father died in 1858 and Hulda is listed as a servant on the 1860 census in the household of an unrelated family. Her mother remarried in 1867, no record has been found on her after the 1870 census. She married Henry L. Black on 7 Nov 1868 in Green County and in 1870 they are living at Stephenson, Illinois where their first two children are born. Lorenzo and Elmer were born in Colorado.
