Enlisted on 13 August 1862 at Centreville, St. Joseph County, Michigan; he was residing at Burr Oak, St. Joseph County prior to his enlistment at 29 years of age; mustered in on 5 September 1862, Company D, Michigan 19th Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a Private; died of disease (febris typhoides) in the General Hospital as Annapolis, Maryland. (The U.S., Registers of Deaths of Volunteers, 1861-1865 includes an extra notation that he was a "paroled prisoner.")
