Grace McManus was born January 9, 1909 in Lakota, ND, and moved to the Oklee, MN area at age three. She attended school in Oklee and graduated in 1926. After graduation she attended St. Cloud Teachers College and earned an Elementary Education teaching degree. She taught in several communities in Minnesota before returning to Oklee to care for her mother. She continued her education career at the Oklee School, teaching the third grade for 25 years. She retired in 1974.

In 1971, McManus and her mother had their house moved from their farm to Elmer Hanson's lot on Lambert Street. McManus was an avid gardener and her lawn was always kept free from fallen leaves. Her garden consisted of beautiful flowers as well as a supply of vegetables, which she enjoyed all winter long. It was not at all unusual to see McManus working in her yard during the early morning hours and into twilight as well. In the winter, no matter the snow or cold, she walked uptown virtually every day. Physical exercise was very important to her daily routine.

McManus was a very active member of the Oklee community, serving at many volunteer activities for seniors. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Oklee and her church activities have included Vacation Bible School Teacher, and serving in various church offices. She was a member of the Board of Directors of Mac Manor Nursing in McIntosh; secretary and treasurer of the Red Lake County Advisory Board on Aging for 20 years; a member of the Community Education Board; an election judge; and member of the Family Council at Pioneer Home in Erskine.

Grace McManus enjoyed travel and visited all of the fifty United States and countries around the world. A trip to Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti was her favorite. Her final trip overseas was to Tromso, Norway, which is far beyond the Arctic Circle.

McManus was beloved by hundreds of former students. She kept in touch with many of them and treasured their calls, notes, cards and photos updating her about their lives and the lives of their families.

McManus is survived by cousins, Vincent (Ruthella) Austad of Nashwauk, MN, Frances (James) Hudson of Engelwood, CO, David (Joyce) Austad of Oklee, MN, Gracie (Dick) Bartholet of Reno, NV, Chauncey (Sam) Austad of Lawton, OK and their families; and special friend and God-child, Gayle Flateland.

Grace McManus is preceded in death by her mother, Anna Austad McManus; cousins, Grunde (Evelyn) Austad, Alfred "Blondie" (Ellen) Austad, Goldie Austad, and Gracie Austad.
