Lidge was the son of John Sherwood and Sarah Elizabeth "Bingham" Wright. He married (1) Nina Belle Ramsey about 1906. They were the parents of four children: Ethel Lee [Mohamed], Hazel Edna, Eva Loyd [Abraham] and Ortie Orville.
Lidge was musically talented and resourceful and took an active role in rearing the children to become upright and moral. He and Nina shared equally in the spiritual direction given to their children and they grew up in a warm and nurturing environment. Elijah moved his family to Shaw, MS, sometime after 1920.
About 1927, he married (2) Katie Caroline Moore and they were the parents of nine children. Elijah was a blacksmith, farmer and Lay Minister in the Primitive Baptist Church.
