His father was Hubbard Lawrence and mother was Mary Goss Lawrence. Rev Hubbard Lawrence Jr Entered Dartmouth College in 1834. Due to ill health he moved from Vermont to Kentucky about 1836 where he was engaged in teaching.
He then graduated in the first class of Marietta College, Marietta, Washington Co, Ohio in 1838. He studed Theology under Ref. Lyman Beecher and Prof. Calvin Stowe at Lane Seminary. His first pastorate was in Toledo, Ohio. He labored in the ministry in Brunswick, Brownhelm, Grafton, and Breaksville, Cuyahoga Co, Ohio.
He married Martha Sawyer on 28 Sep 1841. She was the daughter of Samual Flagg Sawyer and Patience Sanger of Massachusets.
They had 5 children, Martha Elizabeth, Mary Clarissa (Died young), Hubbard, John James, and Mary Calarissa.

In the death of Rev. Hubbard Lawrence which occurred at Brownhelm, Ohio on Sunday, May 26, the Seminary has lost a faithful and generous friend and trustee. His interest I education was continuous throughout the forty years of his active ministry and to the end of his life, His course of study at Dartmouth College was interrupted by ill health which occasioned his removal from his home in Vermont to Kentucky, and afterwards to Ohio. He graduated in the first class of Marietta College in 1838and studied theology under Rev. Lynn Beecher and Prof. Calvin Stowe at Lane Seminary. His first pastorate was in Toledo, then a house missionary field. While there, as in all other parishes under his care, Mr. Lawrence gave special attention to the establishment of a school for fitting young men for college and for giving young women better opportunities than those afforded by district schools.
In coming to New England for a teacher he had a long interview with Miss Lyon at Mt. Holyoke and became more than ever interested in the higher education of young women. Although his time during intervals of home missionary pastorates was often spent as a financial agent for Western Reserve College, he was also alert in assisting studious women in their efforts for education and it is impossible to estimate the number of students who have entered Lake Erie Seminary through his influence. He was elected trustee in 1870 and was rarely absent from the meetings of th board. For his means he was one of the most generous givers to education, It is estimated that his gifts to the funds of Lake Erie, Western Reserve, Marietta, Oberlin and other colleges amounted to $40oo, out of salaries which during his forty years of as a pastor were never more than $800 and were frequently $200. And this does not include his gifts to aid students.

Many friends in Painesville will recall the period of two years during which Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence ended the long struggle with bodily infirmity and the long period of her useful and beautiful life.
Since her death Mr. Lawrence has lived in Brownhelm where he had been a pastor for seven years and where Mrs. Lawrence was buried. Here he has spent four years of quiet waiting and here the summons came to him suddenly and he departed without fear of sign of distress. His funeral services too place on Wednesday May 29, Rev. Professor Currier, of Oberlin, assisting the pastor of the Brownhelm Church, Rev. John Harding. The surviving children of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence are Miss Lawrence of the Seminary, Mr. John Lawrence, of St. Mary's, Ohio.
