COLUMBIANA - Mrs. Gwendolyn Gallatin Maurer, 84, formerly of East Palestine, passed away 1:10 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at Parkside Health Care Center where she had been a resident.

Mrs. Maurer was born Sept. 4, 1924, in Wellsville, a daughter of the late Fred A. and Velma Cunningham Gibson, and had been a 30-year resident of Columbiana, coming from East Palestine.

She had been a graduate of the former White Cross Hospital School of Nursing, Columbus, and had been employed as a private duty nurse.

She was a member of St. Jude's Catholic Church of Columbiana and was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of East Palestine, and was very active at one time in the East Palestine Nurses Association where she had been a charter member.

Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by her stepmother, Mildred Gibson; her husband, Clyde Maurer, and a sister, Juanita Curl.

Mrs. Maurer is survived by a son, Donn Carlos (Betty Joy) Gallatin of Johnson City, Tenn.; and two daughters, Toni (Ron) Freer of East Palestine, and Sue Hurd of Hickory, N.C. Seven grandchildren, Josef and Steven Freer, Aaron, Dan, and Rachel Hurd, and Matt and Andy Gallatin, survive her as well as five great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at the Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home, East Palestine, with the Rev. Thomas Ziegler of her church officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, South Beaver Twp., Pa.

Friends will be received from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

The family has asked that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to either the Way Station, 909 Heck Road, Columbiana, OH 44408 or the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, 962 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., Youngstown, OH 44510
