During the Civil War, the 24th Kentucky Infantry moved to Louisville, Ky., January 1, 1862; then to Bardstown, Spring Garden (on Salt River), Lebanon and Munfordville, Ky. John died of typhoid fever in Bardstown, Ky on Feb. 7, 1862. He was originally buried at the Protestant Church in Bardstown. His remains were later moved to site 721 at Lebanon National Cemetery. He was not married.
